Preparation and evaluation of antibacterial effect of herbal mouthwash containing extract of Citrus hystrix DC.

The oval shaped oral cavity contains surfaces overed with bacteria that causes
various tooth problems such as decay, gingivitis, sensitive teeth, root infection, bad breath
and enamel erosion. The role of herbal plants, including Citrus hystrix DC., is significant in
the development of many mouthwash formulations. In the present research, antibacterial
activity of a herbal mouthwash containing Citrus hystrix DC. has been investigated. The leaf
extraction of Citrus hystrix DC. was carried out for preparation of mouthwash. Two
formulations of mouthwash were prepared by using alcoholic leaves extract of Citrus hystrix
DC., Citrus hystrix essential oil, boric acid, ethanol, sodium chloride and evaluated for
different parameters like colour, pH, turbidity and tability studies. Measurement of inhibition
zone diameter to determine antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli và Streptococcus
mutans of herbal mouthwash using the agar hole method. Research results show that all 2
formulations of herbal mouthwash have the ability to inhibit the growth of all 2 tested strains of bacteria with agar hole diameter varying from 17.72 - 21.33 mm. Herbal mouthwash was successfully prepared. The herbal mouthwash is homogeneous, stable and has antibacterial activity.
