Abstract

Brick walls in buildings often have spaces for windows or doors. It is necessary to use horizontal beams to support the load above the doorway. Horizontal beams can be made of wood, stone, steel, concrete, reinforced concrete or brick blocks. The paper presents some investigation results using two-dimensional calculation model of Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) to simulate the mechanical distribution process in brick walls with a window gap. 1.38m, subjected to vertical static load, evenly distributed, in the plane. The results show that the discrete element model is suitable to simulate mechanical distribution rules in general and the stages of formation and development of cracks, from the initial crack formation, the propagation of cracks when increasing the load until the  destruction of brick walls.
